Do you know the composition of Brazil’s electricity mix?

Brazil holds a prominent position in the global energy landscape.

While many countries still rely heavily on fossil fuels to generate electricity, Brazil has built, over the course of decades, a predominantly renewable electricity mix — an important competitive advantage at a time when decarbonization is becoming a global priority.

After all, what is the electricity mix?

The electricity mix consists of all the sources used to generate the electricity consumed in a country. It is important not to confuse the electricity mix with the energy mix, which is a broader concept: it encompasses all energy sources used in a country, including not only electricity, but also fuels used in transportation, industry and other activities.

Therefore, the electricity mix is a specific part of the energy mix, focused exclusively on electricity generation.

Which sources make up Brazil’s electricity mix?

Brazil’s electricity mix consists of a diverse combination of energy sources, including:

  • Hydropower — harnessing the country’s significant river potential;
  • Wind power — which has expanded significantly in recent years, especially in the Northeast region;
  • Solar power — present both in large-scale photovoltaic plants and in panels installed in homes and businesses;
  • Biomass — mainly derived from sugarcane bagasse and other agricultural and forestry residues;

In addition to other complementary sources, such as thermal and nuclear power.

This diversity of renewable sources places Brazil in a position of global leadership: almost 90% of Brazil’s electricity mix is made up of renewable sources, while the global average is around just over 30%.

In this context, EDF power solutions plays an active role in expanding renewable generation in Brazil. Through the development and operation of wind and solar farms and hydropower plants across different regions of the country, we directly contribute to strengthening Brazil’s renewable electricity mix and increasing its installed capacity from these energy sources.
