EDF power solutions starts construction of transmission line in Northern Fluminense

With an investment of more than R$ 220 million, the project is the first transmission endeavor of the EDF Group in Brazil

EDF power solutions has begun construction on the Oiti project, officially marking its entry into the transmission segment in Brazil. Made possible by the ANEEL auction 002/2022, the project, which involves an investment of over R$ 220 million, is located in the municipalities of São João da Barra and Campos dos Goytacazes, in Rio de Janeiro. As a concessionaire, EDF power solutions will be responsible for the construction of the Porto do Açu substation (SE) and transmission lines for the sectioning of the existing 345 kV Transmission Line (LT) that connects the GNA I thermoelectric plant (UTE) to the Campos substation (SE). Subsequently, the company will operate the Porto do Açu substation and approximately 40 km of transmission lines between the new substation and SE Campos.

“With the experience gained from this first project, we seek to consolidate the company’s operations in the transmission sector, expanding our presence in larger ventures and actively contributing to overcoming one of the main bottlenecks of the current Brazilian energy system,” comments André Salgado, CEO of EDF power solutions in Brazil.

Due to its relevance, Oiti has been recognized as a strategic enterprise for the state of Rio de Janeiro and considered of public utility. Furthermore, the project also boosts the development of the Port of Açu, an important vector for economic growth for the state.

The project is expected to generate around 230 direct and indirect jobs during the peak of the construction phase, which is estimated to be completed by 2026.

The implementation of the Oiti project is in line with the Group EDF’s 2035 ambitions, which aims at the development of advanced networks and flexible solutions capable of meeting the needs of the electrical system, contributing to the energy transition. Furthermore, it represents a strategic step for the company in diversifying its asset portfolio and in its commitment to offering complete solutions to meet the demands of the Brazilian energy sector,” adds André Salgado.

Environmental responsibility
Among the socio-environmental actions underway, the partnership with the Caruara Reserve stands out for the implementation of compensatory planting using restinga species in an area of approximately three hectares (30,000 m²) at the Palacete Farm. This planting area is dedicated to the restoration of this type of ecosystem and represents the expansion of environmental services provided by the Caruara Reserve in the regional territory covered by the Oiti project. The partnership will allow the application of planting, maintenance, and monitoring techniques developed by the Caruara Reserve team in their Conservation Unit, characterized as an RPPN – Private Natural Heritage Reserve – contributing to the recovery of the restinga ecosystem, which is one of the most threatened on the Brazilian coast.
